How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants

Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants which company to choose. These are the practical steps that make your brand more likely to appear in their answers.

More and more buyers skip the list of search results and simply ask an AI assistant: "Which agency should I hire?" or "What is the best software for my clinic?". If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible to a growing group of customers. The good news: the signals AI assistants rely on are ones you can improve.

How AI assistants choose which businesses to mention

Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, and Google's AI Overviews, build their answers from what they learned during training and, increasingly, from live web searches. In practice they tend to recommend businesses that are:

  • clearly described, so the assistant understands what you do, for whom and where;
  • mentioned by other trusted websites, not only by yourself;
  • backed by specific, quotable facts and answers;
  • easy for their crawlers to read.

Step 1: Make your business easy to understand

State plainly on your website what you do, who you serve, where you operate and what makes you different. Use the same name, description and contact details everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. Add structured data (Organization and Service schema) so machines can read these facts reliably.

Step 2: Answer the questions buyers ask

Write pages and FAQs that answer real buyer questions directly in the first sentence, then add detail. "How much does SEO cost?", "How long does a sales funnel take to build?". Clear, factual answers are exactly what assistants look for when they compose a response.

Step 3: Earn mentions on trusted sites

AI assistants lean heavily on third-party sources: industry publications, review sites, comparison articles, local directories and communities. Getting listed, reviewed and quoted on the sites that already rank for your topic has a large effect on whether you are recommended.

Step 4: Let AI crawlers in

Check that your robots.txt does not block crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, keep your pages fast and well structured, and consider publishing an llms.txt file that summarises your key pages.

Step 5: Measure your AI visibility

AI answers change from day to day, so treat visibility as a trend rather than a single result. Regularly ask each assistant the same set of buyer questions and record whether you are mentioned, where you appear, whether your website is cited and which competitors are named instead. Over a few months you will see which changes move the needle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. AI assistants decide their own answers. You can only improve the signals they rely on: clear information about your business, helpful content and mentions on trusted websites.

Is AI search optimisation the same as SEO?

It builds on SEO, but the goal is to appear inside the AI answer itself rather than in a list of links. Clear facts, trusted third-party mentions and well-structured content matter even more.
